You'll be dropping baits and jigs to the seafloor, feeling for that telltale thump that means a fish is on. The Gulf of Mexico is known for its abundance, and on this trip, you're in for a treat. We're targeting a mix of snappers, triggerfish, and whatever else might be biting. The best part? With a 6-hour trip, you've got plenty of time to find the hot spots without spending all day at sea.
Bottom fishing is all about precision and patience. We'll set you up with sturdy rods and reels, typically 30-50 lb class outfits that can handle the weight of sinkers and the pull of big fish. You'll learn to feel for the bottom, detect subtle bites, and master the art of the hook-set. We use a mix of natural baits like squid and cut fish, along with some artificial lures that drive the fish wild. Don't worry if you're new to this – our crew will show you the ropes and have you fishing like a pro in no time. And for you experienced anglers, we've got some tricks up our sleeves that might just teach you a new trick or two.
The Gulf is teeming with life, and each trip brings its own surprises. Lately, we've been pulling up some hefty White Snapper, their silver sides flashing as they come over the rail. Vermilion Snapper, or 'B-liners' as we call 'em, have been thick too – these tasty little fellows are always a welcome sight in the fish box. And let's not forget about the Triggerfish, those odd-looking critters with a face only a mother could love but meat so sweet it'll make you forget all about their looks.
Grey Triggerfish are one of our star attractions on these trips. Don't let their small size fool you – these fish punch well above their weight class when it comes to fight and flavor. Triggerfish typically hang out around reefs and wrecks, using their tough teeth to crunch through crabs and shellfish. They're known for their clever tactics, like locking themselves in place with their dorsal spine when hooked. The best time to target them is usually in the warmer months, but regulations can change, so we always stay up to date to ensure we're fishing responsibly. Anglers love catching triggers not just for the fight, but for the sweet, flaky white meat that's perfect for a fish fry.
White Snapper, also known as Red Porgy, are another prized catch on our bottom fishing trips. These silvery beauties can grow up to 18 inches and put up a respectable fight on the way up. They tend to school up, so when you find one, you've often found a bunch. White Snapper have a delicate, mild flavor that's a hit with just about everyone. We typically find them in depths of 60 to 180 feet, and they're suckers for squid or cut bait.
Vermilion Snapper might not be the biggest fish in the sea, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers and taste. These ruby-red fish are often found in large schools, which means when you find them, the action can be fast and furious. They prefer depths of 80 to 300 feet and are most active during the day. Vermilions are aggressive feeders and will hit both natural baits and artificial lures. Their firm, white flesh is excellent for grilling or frying, making them a favorite among our guests for take-home dinners.
There's something special about bottom fishing in the Gulf that keeps folks coming back for more. Maybe it's the anticipation as your bait sinks into the depths, not knowing what might grab hold. Or perhaps it's the satisfaction of feeling that distinctive thump and the ensuing battle to bring your prize to the surface. Our trips offer a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement – you're out on the open water, soaking up the sun and sea air, but always ready for that next big bite. And let's be honest, there's nothing quite like heading home with a cooler full of fresh-caught fish, knowing you've got some mighty fine eating ahead of you.

Gray triggerfish are a real treat to target out here in the Gulf. These tough little fighters usually hang around reefs and rock piles in 60-180 feet of water. Most run 2-5 pounds, but we occasionally hook into some 10+ pound brutes. They've got sharp teeth and leather-like skin, using their strength to wedge into cracks when hooked. Triggerfish put up a scrappy fight on light tackle. Their firm white meat is delicious too. Spring and fall are prime seasons, when water temps are just right. To land one, use a small sharp hook with squid or cut bait. Let it sit on the bottom, then reel fast when you feel the bite. Keep tension to prevent them diving back into structure. Watch for their distinctive "trigger" dorsal spine when you bring 'em up. It's a cool party trick - they can lock that spine to anchor themselves in place. Crafty little fish, but a blast to catch if you know their tricks.
